The franchisee experience

Alan has worked a range of jobs, but in the last few years, felt like he was working hard, and making enough money to support himself, but didn’t have much else to show for it.

“I realised that I was ready to run my own thing. Because as a subcontractor, there’s work, or there’s no work. There really wasn’t much in between. And there are four kids now, so life’s not getting any cheaper. It’s not funny.”

Alan went through a rigorous process to find the right opportunity to meet his needs, and now couldn’t be happier.

“I’m certainly happier with what I’m doing than I was previously, so that’s a big tick, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. I’m feeling happy about the impact on my family too. For example, all four children need new laptops. Normally I’d just start weeping. But I haven’t had to worry too much. Which is something I’ve never been able to do before. Things are really positive.”

Matt was a plumber with 30+ years experience, but kept asking himself “what am I going to be doing in 20 years?”.

“Coming from a construction project management background where you see how much damage has happened during construction, and I thought fixing that could be really profitable.”

Matt then quickly got up to speed with learning how to repair chips.

“But it really does come together relatively quickly. Being able to practice in the Head Office warehouse in the first two weeks, then seeing how other franchisee’s did it, it came together.”

And now Matt couldn’t be happier.

“The biggest thing I really like is how rewarding it is when you’re helping people. When clients have a chip, it means they can’t enjoy their house. Then you come and fix it for them, they’re just so grateful. When you save them from the cost and effort of replacing a bench or vanity, it’s really rewarding in that way. That’s really not common in other trades.”

So what is FIX ‘N’ CHIPS?

FIX ‘N’ CHIPS is a mobile repair business. We specialise in repairing chips, scratches and dents in many common household surfaces. So when an accident happens and it damages a benchtop, basin or bath, for example, we come in and help repair it to save the builder or homeowner the hassle, cost and time of replacing it.

FIX ‘N’ CHIPS started way back in the year 2000, before being renamed FIX ‘N’ CHIPS in 2005.

FIX ‘N’ CHIPS commenced servicing the Melbourne and Surf Coast regions, and it quickly became obvious that builders increasingly value the reliable service, repair quality, experience, and knowledge provided by FIX ‘N’ CHIPS.

In 2013 the business began operating as a franchise model to better address the unmet demand for the services across Australia. Each franchise has been modelled on an established formula for operating in this dynamic mobile repair business. FIX ‘N’ CHIPS provides franchisees with the opportunity to learn rewarding new skills, support their chosen lifestyle, and provide a solid income.

FIX ‘N’ CHIPS is a member of the Franchise Council of Australia and is a finalist in the 2018 Franchisor Business of the Year awards.

The specific repairs FIX ‘N’ CHIPS is most known for are:

  • Cracks and chips to acrylic baths, shower bases, vanities, metal baths and external brickwork
  • Chip repairs to laminate, marble, Caesarstone, engineered stone kitchen benches
  • Removal of any surface scratches and polish to bath and shower bases
  • Repairs to dented, scratched or chipped powder coated and anodised window frames and sliding doors

Who would suit a FIX ‘N’ CHIPS franchise?

Franchises provide ready-made systems for new business owners to create their own business, rather than having to start from scratch. The Franchisor provides the necessary proprietary information to get each franchisee up and running. Franchisees pay for the right to use the already recognisable brand and the existing marketing, as well as the proven internal structure, pricing schedule, and management system.

In addition, rather than starting a business on your own, you’ll also be part of a broader group who can help share ideas, learn and keep you connected, as well as the support of a National Head Office team.

Two critical aspects determine success in a franchised business:

  • A proven business, which has quality products, excellent training and first class on-going support
  • The drive and desire to succeed demonstrated through consistent, outstanding customer service, focused efforts to grow your territory, and operational excellence to keep your business running

The first of these is achieved through the commitment and infrastructure of the franchisor. FIX ‘N’ CHIPS is an excellent example of a franchised business dedicated to the success of franchisees.

The second of these is dependent on the inherent personality characteristics of each individual franchisee along with the commitment and focus they put into the business and how well the rewards of a secure, pleasurable business lifestyle are appreciated by them.

The following attributes provide a summary of the ideal franchisee for operating a FIX ‘N’ CHIPS franchise:

  • Performs at a high level of energy and standards
  • Uses what others have developed in new or existing situations
  • Avoids mishaps and costly mistakes
  • Develops close working relationships, gaining others’ confidence
  • Shows patience in following detailed instructions
  • Uses up-to-date methods to ensure quality of product or service
  • Projects a confident presence to others
  • Strives for harmony
